I have been busy working on the Trawlermen at Sea ceramic tiles wall mural. This project showcases the beauty of ceramic artistry through the use of bisque tiles. I employed the Cuerda Seca (dry rope) style of glaze painting. This technique adds depth and shading through careful brushwork over the initial glaze layer.
The process is intricate. At this stage, the mural appears a little rough. It will require some detailing and clean-up. After firing, the glazes became darker and richer, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the mural.
Tile Specifications and Coverage Area
The tiles I used are 15 cm each. The total coverage area consists of 12 tiles, measuring 60 cm by 45 cm. This size allows for a striking display that can serve as a focal point in any space.
I selected Mayco Stroke and Coat glazes for this project. These glazes work exceptionally well, providing vibrant colours and a smooth finish. The combination of the Cuerda Seca technique and these glazes results in a unique piece of art.
The Importance of Quality Materials
Using high-quality materials is crucial in ceramic art. The choice of tiles and glazes can significantly impact the final outcome. For this mural, I aimed to achieve a classic design style reminiscent of classic oil paintings. This style is known for its intricate details and organic forms, which I sought to replicate in my work.
The Firing Process
Once the tiles are painted, they undergo a firing process. This step is essential for setting the glazes and ensuring durability. The kiln firing transforms the artwork, enhancing the colours and bringing the design to life.
Conclusion: A Journey in Ceramic Artistry

This mural not only serves as a decorative element but also embodies the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into creating bespoke ceramic pieces. I hope it inspires others to explore the world of ceramic art and consider unique designs for their own spaces.
In the end, the journey of creating this mural reflects a commitment to quality and creativity. I aim to bring bespoke artistry into homes and commercial spaces, making each piece a conversation starter.
